When you’re a parent, it always seems like you’re wondering if you’re doing everything the way you should be. Are you making sure your child takes their meds? Makes friends? Goes to the dentist? Fortunately, children’s dentistry in Attleboro can help with that last one. Read on to learn more about what you can expect at your child’s first dental checkup and cleaning.

Why Oral Health at a Young Age Is Important

You may be questioning why you should bother taking your children to the dentist if their baby teeth are just going to fall out anyway. However, these pearly whites, while not permanent, still need to be brushed and flossed regularly. This is because cavities in children can cause pain and discomfort, and getting treated for decay may result in your child developing a fear of the dentist. As such, it’s important to avoid the need to get treated by helping your child take care of their teeth.

What You Can Expect at Your Child’s First Dental Appointment

The American Dental Association recommends that a child first visit their dentist by the time they turn one year old, or within six months of their first baby tooth erupting. By the time they turn three, they should be attending regular checkups and cleanings at least twice a year.

Your child’s dentist will make the appointment as calming and comfortable as possible. During the appointment, the dentist will examine each and every one of your kid’s budding pearly whites to make sure they are growing in healthy and cavity-free. They can also give you some at-home tips to keep your child’s smile healthy.

After the exam, a dental hygienist will thoroughly clean your little one’s teeth to make them shiny and refreshed. This cleaning will also make it difficult for plaque to stick to their teeth, decreasing their chances of tooth decay in the near future.

At-Home Oral Health Care Tips

Here are some ways you can establish good dental hygiene habits at home with your little one:

  • Brush and floss together as a family – kids love to copy Mommy and Daddy.
  • Let your kid pick out their favorite toothpaste and toothbrush, so they’ll have a positive association with teeth cleaning.
  • Set up a weekly or monthly progress system with mouth-healthy rewards every so often.
  • When it comes time for you to visit the dentist, avoid negative talk. Your child may internalize those bad feelings.

Your son’s or daughter’s oral health is important, and a good first dental appointment sets a great foundation for that.
